    Royal Court Theatre

Acclaimed playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti returns to the Royal Court for the first time since Khandan (2014) for a new play about life in modern Britain. Featuring strong character-driven storytelling, A Kind of People premieres from 5 December 2019.

For the first time since the sell-out Khandan in 2014, acclaimed writer Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti returns to the West End with her new play, A Kind of People, which will run at the Royal Court from 5 December 2019.

In Bhatti’s new tale, several stories interlace on a Friday night at a party that not everyone is enjoying. Gary is pushing for a promotion so that he can give Nicky the life she deserves, away from their council flat. His sister, Karen, just wants to have a life without a cause to fight for. Anjum and Mo will do whatever they need to do to get the best things in life. Victoria wants to dance with somebody. And Mark is… just there. Showing a snippet of modern British life, A Kind of People asks how it’s possible to move forward in life when everything wants to stop you.

A Kind of People follows on from a series of acclaimed hits from Bhatti. Her first play, Behsharam, broke box office records at Soho Theatre and the Birmingham Rep in 2001. Her controversial play Behzti was awarded the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2005 for the best female-written English language play. She is currently working on a commission for the National Theatre, and writes frequently for film, television and radio.

The play is directed by Michael Buffong, who is currently Artistic Director of Talawa Theatre Company. He is joined by Anna Fleischle (Don Juan in Soho; Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at Sheffield Crucible) who provides lighting design.

Casting for A Kind of People is yet to be announced.

A character-driven insight into what it’s like trying to get ahead in contemporary Britain, A Kind of People runs at the Royal Court from 5 December 2019 until 18 January 2020.
