I've seen more textually exploratory Dreams, but Grandage's production is sexy, swift and sure-footed

Sheridan Smith and David Walliams star in a psychedelic sixties version of Shakespeare’s magical comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Directed by Michael Grandage as part of a “Season of Five Plays” at the Noel Coward Theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the hilarious muddle of mistaken identities, misunderstandings and mischievous fairies that sees chaos erupt as human and mystical worlds collide!

A comic tale of tangled love affairs, A Midsummer Night’s Dream follows Lysander and Hermia, who both love each other, but are forbidden to do so. Helena loves Demetrius, but Demetrius, who once loved Helena, now loves Hermia. And when Hermia’s father insists she choose Demetrius as her suitor, Hermia escapes to the forest with Lysander, although Demetrius and Helena are not close behind. Meanwhile, deep in the forest, the King and Queen of the Fairies are locked in their own battle of love. When the humans enter the forest, the fairies see their opportune moment to intervene – and chaos and confusion ensues!

Olivier Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith stars as Titania, Queen of the Fairies. Most recently seen in the title role in Hedda Gabler, Smith’s acclaimed work includes Flare Path, Legally Blonde, Mrs Biggs and Jonathan Creek. David Walliams joins the cast as Bottom in his first West End appearance since No Man’s Land. Further cast members include Susannah Fielding as Hermia, Katherine Kingsley as Helena, Sam Swainsbury as Lysander, Stefano Braschi as Demetrius, Stefan Adegbola and Pádraic Delaney as Oberon/Theseus and Gavin Fowler as Puck.

Directed by Grandage (Evita, Privates on Parade), A Midsummer Night’s Dream features design by Christopher Oram and lighting design by Paule Constable. Considered to be one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream dances into London to enchant the Noel Coward Theatre. Featuring a star-studded cast, this new production is sure to be a dreamlike experience!
