    London Coliseum

Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori’s contemporary opera is a devastating and intimate story of family and race in modern America.

    An award-winning contemporary opera

Tony Award winner Jeanine Tesori’s acclaimed new opera, Blue, receives a UK premiere from the English National Opera. Exploring generational divides and race in modern America, this affecting and intimate family drama is performed at the London Coliseum.

Blue is the story of an African-American family, headed by a police officer. When he and his son clash over their very different worldviews - the Son is a peaceful protestor and activist, who believes the Father is upholding an oppressive system - it threatens to tear their family apart.

Both a deeply personal story about a Mother, Son and Father, and an appraisal of US politics and racism, composer Tesori’s Blue contemporary opera features a libretto by Tazewell Thompson. It won the 2020 MCANA Best New Opera Award after a US premiere in 2019.

At the Coliseum, Blue is directed by rising star Tinuke Craig (Old Vic: Jitney) and conducted by Matthew Kofi Waldren. The Blue opera London cast is led by Zwakele Tshabalala as the Son, Michael Sumuel as the Father and Nadine Benjamin as the Mother.

Book Blue opera tickets for a powerful new story about race, family and loyalty, brought to London by some of theatre’s brightest rising stars.
