New company Elliott & Harper, founded by Tony and Olivier Award-winners Marianne Elliott and Chris Harper, bring audiences a gender-bending Company by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. The 1970 musical comedy at the Gielgud Theatre reimagines central character Bobby as female Bobbie. Bobbie is 35, celebrating her birthday surrounded by friends, and she is the only singleton in the room. As her friends fret over her unmarried state, Bobbie contemplates whether or not she wants to be in a relationship. The pros and cons of dating and marriage unfold through the stories of Bobbie’s friends in this funny and thoughtful musical.
The story revolves around the unmarried, 35-year-old man Bobby, with this production changing the male Bobby to a female Bobbie. With modern women pressured to ‘have it all’ – a career, a partner and a family – the flighty and promiscuous Bobbie now has a body clock that influences whether she wants to settle down – or not.
Company has an unconventional format for a big Broadway musical. There is the potential for several outcomes at Bobbie’s birthday party, where she is surrounded by couples. As they fuss about her being unmarried, scenes with each of her friends present her with the pros and cons of pairing off for life, amongst Bobbie’s own experiences of dating.
With a Tony Award-winning book and score, the musical features well-known numbers, including ““Another Hundred People”, “Getting Married Today”, “The Ladies Who Lunch” and “Being Alive”.
Rosalie Craig leads as Bobbie, having previously worked with Elliott at the National Theatre, where she won the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress in a Musical as Althea in Tori Amos’ musical The Light Princess.
Further casting includes Broadway legend Patti LuPone as Joanne. LuPone most recently appeared as cosmetics entrepreneur Helena Rubenstein in Broadway’s production of War Paint. Numerous other credits include Rose in Broadway’s Gypsy, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which saw her nominated for Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. She is also well-known for her extensive television and film work.
The star cast is completed by Mel Giedroyc as Sarah, Jonathan Bailey as Jamie, George Blagden as PJ, Ashley Campbell as Peter, Richard Fleeshman as Andy, Alex Gaumond as Paul, Richard Henders as David, Ben Lewis as Larry, Daisy Maywood as Susan, Jennifer Saayeng as Jenny, Matthew Seadon-Young as Theo and Gavin Spokes as Harry, as well as Michael Colbourne, Francesca Ellis, Ewan Gillies, Grant Neal and Jaimie Pruden.
