About the show

Nick Payne’s romantic comedy Constellations transfers to London’s Duke of York’s Theatre as part of the venue’s new West End season. Originally premiering in January at the Royal Court as part of the Jerwood New Playwrights programme, the hit production opens on November 16th for a strictly limited season.

Running at just over an hour, Constellations is the heart-warming romantic comedy centring on the relationship between a bee-keeper and cosmology academic. An extraordinary play about love and friendship, Constellations follows Roland and Marianne, who meet at a friend’s barbecue. Not to be confused with a traditional boy-meets-girl rom-com, the play plunges deep into the theory of the universe, discussing the infinite possibilities of love, friendship and free will.

Acclaimed actor Rafe Spall and award-winning actress Sally Hawkins reprise their roles as Roland and Marianne, after receiving rave reviews. Spall is best-known for his multiple on-screen appearances, including Hot Fuzz, Desperate Romantics and Pete Versus Life, as well as starring in Donmar Warehouse’s One Day When We Were Young. Golden Globe winner Hawkins is known for starring in Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky, for which she received the award for Best Actress. Her further credits include Jayne Eyre, Made in Dagenham and Never Let Me Go.

Directed by Michael Longhurst (Remembrance Day), Constellations features design by Tom Scutt, lighting design by Lee Curran and sound design by David McSeveney, with original music by Simon Slater. A breath-taking drama that delves into the theory of the quantum multiverse, Constellations is the smash-hit production about the boundless potential of a connection between two people. Opening for a limited time only at the Duke of York’s Theatre, don’t miss out on this acclaimed play!
