Book Dana H Tickets For An Astonishing Theatre Experience
One of Broadway’s most talked-about plays of recent years makes its anticipated London debut in 2023, delivering a theatre experience that will challenge, provoke and captivate. Lucas Hnath’s Dana H., based on transcripts from his mother’s own life, was a Broadway sensation and won two major accolades at the 2022 Tony Awards. This taught, disconcerting and absolutely gripping play now arrives at the Royal Court Theatre for a limited season that will make you reconsider the boundaries of theatrical storytelling.About Dana H: A Groundbreaking Drama Based on a True Story
Told in her own words, Dana H. recounts psych ward chaplain Dana Higginbotham’s remarkable five-month ordeal, as she was held captive in numerous Florida motels by one of her patients back in 1997.In a bold and confronting move, the show uses Dana’s own voice from recorded interviews that are reconstructed by playwright Lucas Hnath - who is also Dana’s son. With Deirdre O’Connell lip-syncing throughout, audiences are faced with a work that blurs the lines between artifice and reality, good and evil, and defies expectations at every turn.
Sitting at a lean 75 minutes with no interval, this is a powerful piece of theatre that will keep London theatregoers transfixed, just as it did on Broadway. Key to the production is sound designer Mikhail Fiksel’s award-winning, richly-realised soundscape, which meets O’Connell’s understated but masterful performance to discomforting effect.
The Dana H. Cast and Creative Team
Dana H. is written by Obie Award-winning playwright Lucas Hnath (Red Speedo; The Christians), who developed his mother’s story for the stage using transcripts of her interviews with Steve Cosson. Rather than editing the interviews into a script, he has instead moulded the hours of dialogue into a swift but engrossing verbatim account, directed by Tony Award winner Les Waters. The creative team also includes sound designer Mikhail Fiksel, who won the Tony Award for Best Sound Design of a Play for his work.
Dana is played by acclaimed Broadway actress Deirdre O’Connell, who reprises the role direct from New York. O’Connell’s “virtuoso [and] astonishing” (Time Out NYC) performance earned her huge critical acclaim and the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play.
