About Death of England: Michael

In the wake of his father’s unexpected death, Michael is overwhelmed by a sense of powerlessness and anger. Faced with difficult truths about his dad’s legacy and the country that shaped him, he decides to stand up at the funeral and give an unannounced, unprepared speech.

Starring Thomas Coombes (Baby Reindeer), Death of England: Michael is a searching and scorching monologue told from the point of view of a working-class white British man who finds grief is loaded with uncomfortable questions. Originally performed by Rafe Spall in 2020, it forms the first part of Clint Dyer and Roy Williams’ state-of-the-nation trio of plays.

Death of England: The Plays

Addressing questions of identity, race, class, cancel culture, colonialism and interpersonal relationships in modern Britain, Michael is the first part of a trilogy by Clint Dyer (Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical) and Roy Williams (Sucker Punch). Connected by characters who are friends, lovers and parents, Death of England: The Plays grapples with questions of identity and what it means to be British in 2024.

Following their acclaimed premieres at the National Theatre between 2020 and 2023, the three parts now come together at Soho Place for a strictly limited West End season.

Tommy Coombes is absolutely brilliant as Michael. The story feels really relevant today and the issues many people are facing. Looking forward to the next parts of the play.
