Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s new play Emilia receives its West End transfer after a critically acclaimed season at Shakespeare’s Globe. Witness the story of Emilia Bassano, muse to Shakespeare and England’s first feminist writer, when this intelligent production comes to Vaudeville theatre in March.
After wowing audiences and totting up rave reviews, the Shakespeare’s Globe production of Emilia receives its well-deserved West End transfer. This new play by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm tells the extraordinary tale of Emilia Bassano, a British poet living 400 years ago and whose fight for education and equality is the stuff of legends. The production runs at Vaudeville Theatre from 8 March 2019 until 1 June 2019.
Bassano is often credited with being England’s first feminist writer and is thought to have been a muse to William Shakespeare, leaving behind an immortal presence within the characters in his plays. She was a theological pioneer, the founder of a school and a mother besides. Thanks to the myriad letters, legal records and poems she left behind, her life is well documented.
Morgan Lloyd Malcolm wrote Emilia specifically for Shakespeare's Globe, marking the first original commission by Michelle Terry as new Artistic Director. A playwright and screenwriter, Malcolm has written for Soho Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company/Clean Break Theatre, Hampstead Theatre and others. Among her most critically acclaimed plays are Belongings and The Wasp.
Fittingly, the production features an all-female creative team. Direction comes from Nicole Charles, musical composition is by Bill Barclay, choreography is courtesy of Anna Morrissey, while design and costumes are the work of Joanna Scotcher.
The West End run stars Saffron Coomber, Adelle Leonce, and Clare Perkins as the Emilias. Further casting includes Nadia Albina, Jackie Clune, Jenni Maitland, Anna Andresen, Sarah Seggari, Charity Wakefield, Sophie Stone, Carolyn Pickles, Amanda Wilkin and Tanika Yearwood.
