Kenneth MacMillan’s passionate piece about love and decadence returns to London for the second time in over 30 years. Set in the dark streets of 18th century Paris, Manon is the extravagant ballet that sees the titular character caught between two completely different lives.

Kenneth MacMillan’s passion-piece about love, fortune and decadence returns to London for the second time in over 30 years. Created by the acclaimed choreographer, Manon premiered at the Royal Ballet in 1974 and is regarded today as one of the most challenging and demanding ballet roles of all time.

Based on the 1732 novel Manon Lescaut by Abbé Prévost, the large-scale ballet contains complex choreography created to showcase the talents of the Royal Ballet soloists and corps de ballet. Manon is performed by the English National Ballet and plays a limited season at the London Coliseum as part of an extensive national tour.

Manon sees the young and idealistic titular character caught between the options of marrying the wealthy, older Monsieur GM or running away with poor student Des Grieux. Choosing the latter, the two head to the streets of Paris to escape her controlling brother and Monsieur GM. Their adventure takes them to a new world across the sea, where the fateful story builds to an ultimately tragic end.

Creator Kenneth MacMillan was a ballet dancer and former Artistic Director of the Royal Ballet, with his tenure running from 1970 to 1977. After his resignation, he remained with the company as resident choreographer until his death in 1992. MacMillan uses Jules Massenet’s score from the 1884 opera of the same name, making this production an operatic ballet. The production also features design by Mia Stensgaard and lighting design by Mikki Kunttu.

A unique opportunity to see a contemporary ballet that is acclaimed throughout dance, the production also features the English National Ballet Philharmonic. Manon returns to the West End for a strictly limited season as part of a UK tour, playing at the London Coliseum from 16 January to 20 January 2019.
