After an acclaimed run at the Manchester International Festival last year, Fatherland returns to the stage, playing limited performances at London’s Lyric Hammersmith. Taking place in present day England, the pertinent production captures the changing landscape of identity, masculinity and nationality through physical theatre and stunning music.
The Lyric Hammersmith’s latest thrilling collaborative production Fatherland plays throughout May and June at the London venue. Produced by LIFT, Frantic Assembly, Manchester International Festival, The Royal Exchange Theatre and Lyric Hammersmith, Fatherland is created by Scott Graham, Simon Stephens and Karl Hyde. Together, the trio have made a vital work, drawing on father/son relationships for inspiration.
Set in present day England, the show explores a changeable landscape of identity, masculinity and nationality and the pressure of society’s expectations. Physical theatre and music drive the stories forward in this stunning, visual staging of our modern world. Constructed using interviews with men in their hometowns and their families, the script captures what people are feeling and thinking today.
Fatherland includes an ensemble of thirteen cast members, including Joseph Alessi, Luke Brown, Matt Cross, Bryan Dick, Emun Elliott, Ankit Giri, Nick Holder, David Judge, Neil McCaul, Tachia Newell, Ferdy Roberts, Luke Rigg and Deka Walmsley. Each night, there will also be a chorus of voices from Manchester joining the cast.
Featuring the songs and stories of a forgotten England, Fatherland is choreographed by Eddie Kay, with design by Jon Bausor, lighting design by Jon Clark and sound design by Ian Rickson for Autograph.
Playing a strictly limited season at the Lyric Hammersmith, Fatherland is the touching and pertinent play about the world’s ever-changing societal pressures. The production runs at the theatre from 25 May to 23 June 2018, with a press night on 31 May 2018. With the theatrical powerhouses behind this show and its great reception at Manchester International Festival last year, this isn’t one to miss.
