    Sadler's Wells

Birmingham Royal Ballet come to Sadler's Wells with these two, exciting dances presented as a double bill. The past and present are shown side by side in these ballets, where one addresses an important moment in history and the other looks at current political conflicts.

Two ballets from two choreographers take a chance to reflect on different significant moments in history in the Birmingham Royal Ballet's production of Fire and Fury at the Sadler's Wells. First, we see King Louis XIV dancing as the Sun God in his court, earning him the nickname of The Sun King. In 1834, the Houses of Parliament catch fire and Turner immortalises the moment in a painting, which inspires the second piece. This double-bill entitled Fire and Fury is presented by the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and plays at the London venue for two performances, capturing power behind fire as a metaphor for change.

David Bintley, Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet for over two decades, choreographs The King Dances. Bintley is held in high esteem for his creation of new works, such as The Tempest, Hobson’s Choice and Faster. His piece is paired with Ignite, by young choreographer Juanjo Arqués. Arqués is based in Amsterdam, where he regularly works with ballet schools and junior companies. He was chosen as the most promising young artist for this initiative that pairs a younger choreographer with one that is more established in the dance industry.

These new ballets from different generations of choreographers guarantee to show audiences the possibilities of dance, and what it can achieve. Paying tribute to pivotal moments in history, dance is used as a powerful method of storytelling. Fire and Fury - BRB plays at London's Sadler's Wells from 30 October to 31 October 2018.
