About the show

The hugely successful theatre adaptation of David Walliams’ children’s book Gangsta Granny is due to transfer to London’s West End in the summer of 2017, following a hugely successful UK tour. The show is scheduled to open at the Garrick Theatre on 1st August 2017, with previews beginning from 26th July 2017.

Gangsta Granny has seen huge success as it has toured around the UK after first premiering in 2015, including being nominated for a UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People.

This production is by the Birmingham Stage Company and adapted by Neal Foster, the man who has also brought the immensely popular Horrible Histories shows to the West End, including Part One, Two and Three of Barmy Britain.

The play tells the story of a young boy named Ben, who hates being forced to stay with his Granny every Friday and being fed cabbage soup when his parents go to a popular TV dancing show. With her TV not working and Scrabble as the only source of entertainment Ben begs his parents to not leave him there… that is, until he finds a secret stash of jewels hidden in his Grandma’s biscuit tin.

Gangsta Granny was originally published as a book by David Walliams in 2011, before being made into a hugely popular TV adaptation for the BBC in 2013, when it was first broadcast on Boxing Day. It was subsequently made into a stage version by the Birmingham Stage Company and began touring on 10th November 2015 and is scheduled to continue until its West End transfer.

Gangsta Granny will begin shows at the Garrick Theatre on 26th July, with an official opening on 1st August and is scheduled to run until 3rd September. With a brilliant cast and creative team behind it and the genius of David Walliams’ book, this is bound to be one of the most exciting children’s’ theatre productions of the summer.

Simple set but very effective and was a very close interpretation of the film. Kids thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hilarious piece of theatre that the kids sitting in the audience around me really enjoyed getting involved with - plenty of silliness... More

Very funny and superb acting. Children loved it and was well worth travelling from Sussex to see it. Would have been a huge disappointment... More
