    Hamnet Tickets

    Garrick Theatre

The Royal Shakespeare Company’s dazzling play, based on Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning novel, transfers for a limited season.

See A Wondrous New Play With Hamnet Tickets

Go behind the scenes of Shakespeare’s greatest works and discover the woman who was a constant at his side in Hamnet at the Garrick Theatre. This moving and passionate play transfers to London for a limited season after selling out ahead of its world premiere in Stratford-upon-Avon.

    About Hamnet

In 1582, natural healer Agnes Hathaway meets a young Latin tutor. They marry and have three children, but the plague claims their son Hamnet when he is eleven years old. This is just the start of their story, which ripples through truth, fiction, and a theatrical legacy lasting hundreds of years.

Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel, adapted for the stage, delves beyond one of history’s most famous writers to look at the wild and wondrous woman who married him. This moving theatrical love letter is a tribute to nature, death, grief, and beauty borne from unbearable suffering.

Is Hamnet the story of Hamlet?

The two stories have very similar names, but Hamnet is not the same as Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Maggie O’Farrel’s novel is an imagined account of the Shakespeare family’s grief after their son dies, whilst Hamlet is famously about the Prince of Denmark’s grief for his father and feelings of loss and revenge.

The two stories are connected however, with many people thinking Shakespeare’s own loss inspired his most famous tragedy. When you sit down to watch Hamnet in the West End, the link between the two will become clear in this fictional account of real events.

    Hamnet Cast and Creative Team

The Hamnet West End cast is led by Madeleine Mantock (Charmed, The Long Song) as Agnes Hathaway, with further cast including Tom Varey as Wiliam Shakespeare, Sarah Belcher as Joan, Ajani Cabey as Hamnet, Alex Jarrett as Judith, Peter Wight as John/Will Kempe, and Will Brown as Burbage/Father John.

It is adapted for the stage by playwright Lolita Chakrabarti (Life of Pi, Red Velvet) and directed by Royal Shakespeare Company Interim Artistic Director Erica Whyman.

    Hamnet Play Reviews

This wondrous adaptation has already enjoyed its world premiere and press night in Stratford-upon-Avon, and for any fans of the Royal Shakespeare Company other work - including the hit Wolf Hall trilogy on stage - this is one not to miss.

The Mail On Sunday dubbed it “pure theatre gold”, and The Times praised it for being “evocative and beautifully acted.” Fans of the award-winning novel will be captivated by the visceral and moving portrayal of grief and family on stage, and if you haven’t read the book this is a powerful piece of theatre in its own right.
