Duke of York's Theatre

Both hilarious and prescient, Laura Wade’s Home, I’m Darling is everything you could want from a night at the theatre. The play transfers to Duke of York’s Theatre with Katherine Parkinson reprising her starring role.

Laura Wade's acclaimed play Home, I'm Darling transfers to the West End's Duke of York's Theatre before continuing on tour. A collaboration between Theatr Clwyd and the National Theatre, this clever comedy probes marriage, fantasy and domesticity with no shortage of charisma. Tamara Harvey directs, with Katherine Parkinson reprises her starring role.

Presiding over an immaculate 1950s-style household, Judy puts everything she's got into embodying the perfect housewife. Her love of the bygone era isn't that strange; surely all married couples need a slice of fantasy in their lives? But maintaining the status of domestic goddess isn't all that simple, and there are almost imperceptible cracks in that pristine veneer.

Playwright Laura Wade’s recent works for the stage include Posh at the Royal Court Theatre and Alice at the Sheffield Crucible. She counts a Critics' Circle Theatre Award and a Pearson Playwrights Best Play Award among her accolades.

Katherine Parkinson is known for her starring roles in cult comedy The IT Crowd, as well as dramas such as Humans. Her most recent theatre credits include Before the Party at the Almeida Theatre and Dead Funny at the Vaudeville Theatre.

Onstage with Parkinson is Richard Harrington, who reprises the role of her onstage husband Johnny. Sara Gregory also returns, in the role of Alex. Further casting features Susan Brown, Charlie Allen, Ellie Burrow, Siubhan Harrison, Hywel Morgan and Jane MacFarlane.

Tamara Harvey is Theatr Clwyd’s Artistic Director. Some of her most recent theatre directing credits are Pride and Prejudice at the Sheffield Crucible, From Here To Eternity in London's West End and The Kitchen Sink at the Bush Theatre.

The eye-popping set is courtesy of designer Anna Fleischle. Sound design comes from Tom Gibbons, lighting design from Lucy Carter and choreography from Charlotte Broom. Hannah Noone is staff director and Christopher Akrill is assistant choreographer.

The cast of the National Theatre run comprised Katherine Parkinson, Richard Harrington, Barnaby Kay, Kathryn Drysdale, Sara Gregory and Sian Thomas.

Having premiered at Theatr Clwyd, Home, I'm Darling went on to enjoy a season at London's National Theatre, and its West End transfer means another chance to see this gem. A smart comedy with lots to say about gender performativity and relationships, it is fully deserving of its rave reviews. Catch it at Duke of York's Theatre from 26 January 2019. Press night fell on 5 February 2019.
