Young store-owner, Usnavi, is our narrator on this journey through the multi-cultural New York neighbourhood of Washington Heights. Individual stories begin to emerge from the tapestry of this energetic community; from Nina who is no longer able to attend college, to Vanessa who dreams of financial security and Abuela Claudia who finds herself the owner of a winning lottery ticket worth $96,000. Their tales are told through an inventive Latin and hip-hop inspired score that suggests though life may be a struggle, hope, love and music will always be there.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is the prodigiously talented composer, writer, playwright, actor and rapper who received the MacArthur Fellowship ‘Genius Grant’ for his success on In the Heights and the Broadway phenomenon, Hamilton. His new musicals have caused waves amongst the theatre community, with some suggesting that Miranda has revolutionised the form of musical theatre. Fusing rap delivery with intelligent lyric writing, Miranda has created his own unique genre with story-telling styles we wouldn’t traditionally associated with musicals.
The multi-generational cast that performs at the King’s Cross Theatre sees several repeat performances from the stars of the original Southwark Playhouse production. In particular, Victoria Hamilton-Barritt has received rave reviews for her reprise as the gossiping salon owner, Daniela. Sam Mackay (Royal Court, National Theatre) stars as Usnavi alongside popstar Jade Ewen as Vanessa.
