At one point the baddie (a non giant, giant) asked for a drum effect (rimshot) to punctuate her joke. An audience plant shouted she would get one if the joke was funny. Unfortunately, that is the problem in a nutshell. The vast majority of this is not funny. The dame (mother) is not charming, but shouty doing the same thing over and over again. This is just bad. The sets are good though.

This production has serious problems and it is really sad for this theatre to put on such a poor panto - when it is panto which so often introduces children/people to the theatre. Some of the traditional panto stuff is included - booing for the baddie etc, but done in such a poor way that the cast have to keep encouraging a rather bored audience to respond more loudly. The arrival of each character requires more hellos, repeated. All the charm, wit and inventivesness of Potted Panto is lacking in this. Just sad really.

Basically, its as if Harry Enfield's teenage character, Kevin, has had a go at panto. Completely, fails to appeal to all ages - ie bringing the whole family together, the magic of panto. Heavy beat, tuneless, loud songs and completely messes up the main plot of Jack and the Beanstalk. No need to climb to reach the giant, so they apparently climb to rescue the cow - which had just been sold. Not good. The cast are very shouty, the jokes are not good and the characters one dimentional.

Stupidly believed a Guardian review. Luckily, now past Xmas, got very heavily discounted tickets. Unluckily, bought tickets for more than one performance before seeing the production... This is a woke mess. It is completley devoid of charm and is not nearly as funny as they think it is. The cast nearly wore themselves out trying to get an increased reaction from the audience.

Having seen many productions at this theatre, all of a good quality, this came as quite a shock. Perhaps unfair as we saw it straight after the far superior Mother Goose.

Luckily the tickets were heavily discounted.
