August Wilson’s acclaimed modern classic about illegal cab drivers in 1970s Pittsburgh returns to London.

A ground-breaking, modern American classic

American playwright August Wilson’s acclaimed play Jitney returns to London for a strictly limited season this year. The modern classic is a rich and powerful story of characters divided by race, class and generations in 1970s America.

In Pittsburgh, USA, a group of men take passengers to and from the Pittsburgh Hill District in illegal taxi cabs called jitneys. This group of eight unlicensed drivers are constantly under threat from the authorities, and their fragile peace is about to become even more disrupted when the boss’ son returns from prison.

Pulitzer Prize winner Wilson’s play about eight men living and working in racially-segregated, post-Vietnam America is part of his hugely acclaimed, 10-part Pittsburgh Cycle which also includes Fences and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The Old Vic’s production transfers from Leeds Playhouse after an acclaimed season in 2021, and is directed by Tinuke Craig (The Color Purple). Casting includes Geoff Aymer, Leanne Henlon, Wil Johnson, Leemore Marrett Jr and Tony Marshall.

Playing at the Old Vic for just four weeks, book Jitney tickets to watch Wilson’s superlative expression of the mid-century African American experience, in this compelling and powerful drama.
