Derek Jarman’s iconic punk film Jubilee is adapted for the stage in a high tempo, electrifying new production at London’s Lyric Hammersmith. Playing a strictly limited season, the action is fast-forwarded to the social and political turmoil of 2017, creating a show suitable for punks young and old and for everyone who is desperate to set the world on fire.
Based on the original 1978 screenplay by Derek Jarman and James Whaley, Jubilee sees faith in the establishment collapsing from all corners, as nihilism and creativity collide. With the far-right marching on, culture wars are rife and a spirit of anarchy lingers in the air.
Peppered with riotous music, unique fashion and all kinds of sex, the production includes a girl gang on a killing spree and a time-travelling Queen Elizabeth I.
One of the film’s original cast members Toyah Willcox joins the cast, alongside Travis Alabanza, Harold Finley, Craig Hamilton, Gareth Kieran Jones, Tom Ross-Williams, Sophie Stone, Temi Wilkey, Rose Wardlaw and Lucy Ellinson.
Chris Goode adapts and directs Jubilee, with design by Chloe Lamford, lighting design by Lee Curran and sound and music by Timothy X Atack. With a gloriously rebellious soundtrack, the show is a take-no-prisoners affair that promotes free spirit and voices. Jubilee plays at the Lyric Hammersmith from 10 February to 10 March 2018, with a press night on 20 February 2018.
