Julius Caesar marks BAFTA nominated director Angus Jackson’s second Shakespeare outing at the Barbican this Winter. The riveting tale of political intrigue, violence and betrayal arrives as part of the RSC’s much anticipated Rome Season from November.

Arriving as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s thrilling Rome Season at the Barbican this winter is Julius Caesar, one of The Bard’s most ruthless political tragedies. Mapping the conniving machinations of Rome’s ruling class, this iconic tale of backstabbing and betrayal is led by BAFTA nominated season director Angus Jackson, playing a limited run from this November.

Julius Caesar follows the story of the titular Roman emperor on his triumphant return from war. Mutinous whispers mar his homecoming as the Roman elite begin to fear the power he is amassing. Soon his close friend Brutus is drawn into a deadly conspiracy to end Caesar’s reign, setting the stage for a historic fracture in the Roman republic.

Following his sell-out productions of Tom Morton-Smith’s Oppenheimer and James Fenton’s adaptation of Don Quixote, season director Angus Jackson leads Shakespeare’s tragic tale of power, politics and corruption.

Andrew Woodall plays the title role of Julius Caesar alongside Alex Waldmann who returns to the RSC to portray Brutus. Alex last appeared with the RSC in King John and As You Like It in 2013. Woodall will also play Enobarbus in Antony and Cleopatra later in the season.

Joining director Angus Jackson on the creative team is celebrated designer Robert Innes Hopkins, composer Mira Calix, with sound by Carolyn Downing. RSC associate lighting designer Tim Mitchell brings his singular style to the production, with movement and fight choreographed by Scott Ambler and Terry King.

Julius Caesar is part of the RSC’s electrifying Rome MMXVII season transferring to the Barbican this year, the second directorial outing for Angus Jackson following Coriolanus in early November. Iqbal Khan helms a spectacular adaptation of Anthony and Cleopatra, with Blanche McIntyre concluding the season with the tale of Titus Andronicus.

Don’t miss the opportunity to check out this ancient epic, playing a limited run at the Barbican from the 24th November 2017 to 20th January 2018.
