    Sadler's Wells

This comedic ballet set in the countryside playfully looks at the ups and downs of historical country living. Cabbages, clog dancing and a real, live Shetland pony adds charming detail to this story of true love and a mother meddling in a young woman's affairs.

Lise wants to marry a poor farmhand, but her mother wants her to choose the wealthy but not very bright Alain. What proceeds is a spirited, comedic romp through a pretty pastoral setting, complete with a Shetland pony, a maypole and the angry flinging of vegetables. La Fille Mal Gardee is the incredibly fun ballet by Frederick Ashton, now firmly part of dance’s modern canon.

After seeing Anna Pavlova dance in 1917, Ashton was determined to be a dancer. At the time, Ashton was forced into a path of what was then considered respectable employment. Never letting go of his dream to go on the stage, he was accepted to ballet school at the surprisingly late age of 20. He quickly moved into choreography with the support of Marie Rambert, which was the start of a long career of creating original ballets.

La Fille Mal Gardee was created for the Royal Ballet in 1960, with a new score based on the 1864 original. After its premiere, the ballet received positive reviews and went on to be staged regularly, with a DVD of it filmed in 1981, 1989 and 2005. This Birmingham Royal Ballet production is sure to be a joyous one, playing at London's Sadler's Wells for a strictly limited number of performances. The production runs from 1 November to 3 November 2018.
