ENO’s Artistic Director Daniel Kramer brings Verdi’s masterpiece to the London Coliseum stage this spring. Kramer’s exciting debut production is set to capture the bold emotive power of the text, portraying its archetypal themes of love, betrayal and self-sacrifice.

La Traviata follows the tale of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan whose restless life has exhausted her body and spirit. At a party she meets Alfredo, a passionate admirer concerned with Violetta failing health. The two embark on a tumultuous love affair that challenges the rigid Paris society and threatens a dramatic upheaval in both of their lives.

Irish soprano Claudia Boyle takes the lead role of Violetta. A former member of the Salzburger Festspeiel’s Young Singers Project, Boyle’s previous ENO leading roles include The Pirates of Penzance and The Pearl Fishers. In the role of Violetta’s avid admirer and broken-hearted lover is the rising tenor and finalist of the 2017 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Lukhanyo Moyake, in his UK debut as Alfredo.

Heralded by many as Verdi’s magnum opus La Traviata features one of the most iconic, romantic and tragic scores of all time. Leo McFall conducts the piece in his exciting ENO house debut which has been conceived by Daniel Kramer particularly to showcase ENO’s Award-winning chorus.

La Traviata is one of my favourite operas which I have seen many times and the music and singing was brilliant as always. The set and costumes were interesting and gave me a bit of a surprise as I was unprepared for them. It's always great to see different interpretations of operas. I enjoyed the first act setting and costumes but was disappointed with the setting of the final act.
