James Graham’s new play Labour of Love is set to have its premiere run at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End from 27th September 2017, for a strictly limited ten week period.
This witty and poignant political comedy pairs up the acclaimed creative team of writer James Graham and director Jeremy Herrin once again, following their acclaimed play This House which enjoyed an acclaimed run at the Garrick Theatre in 2016.
Labour of Love tells the story of Labour Party MP David Lyons who only cares about modernisation and his own electability. His constituency agent, Jean Whittaker however, will always put her principles and her community first.
Set away from Westminster, the focus of Graham’s previous play This House, Labour of Love is set in the Labour Party’s traditional northern heartlands, where the battle of ideas, class and culture come to a head. With over 25 years of shifting Labour ideology, through Kinnock, to Blair and into Corbyn, what does the future look like?
Labour of Love is presented by Headlong and the Michael Grandage Company. Headlong are responsible for some of the most acclaimed and innovative theatre in recent history, including 1984, People, Places and Things and American Psycho. The Michael Grandage Company have also seen great success with their recent productions of Photography 51 starring Nicole Kidman and Dawn French’s 30 Million Minutes.
Labour of Love stars Martin Freeman as David Lyons MP. Freeman is known for his huge range of acclaimed TV, film and theatre work having shot to fames as Tim in The Office in 2001, before starring in Hollywood blockbusters such as The Hobbit and Captain America, as well as the award winning BBC TV series Sherlock.
He is joined by Tamsin Greig, co-starring as Jean Whittaker. Greig has starred in a range of television series', including Episodes, Green Wing, Black Books and Friday Night Dinner, and recently starred as Malvolia in Twelfth Night at the National's Olivier Theatre.
Olivier Award-nominee Rachael Stirling heads up the fantastic supporting ensemble including Kwong Loke, Dickon Tyrrell and Susan Wokoma. Stirling has twice been nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Olivier Award for her performances in An Ideal Husband at the Vaudeville Theatre and The Priory at the Royal Court Theatre.
Labour of Love is written by James Graham (This House, Finding Neverland and The Vote) and directed by Jeremy Herrin (This House, Uncle Vanya and South Downs). The play features design by Lee Newby and sound by Paul Arditti.
