Le Jeune Homme et la Mort / La Sylphide Tickets
The devastating power of love and desire is explored by the English National Ballet in this enchanting double bill of Roland Petit’s Le Jeune Homme et la Mort and Frank Andersen’s La Sylphide. These two evocative dance pieces play alongside each other at the London Coliseum from January 2018.
Le Jeune Homme et la Mort follows the story of a young hopeless lover, awaiting the return of his fickle mistress. When his mistress finally appears she torments him, turning his unbridled affection against him. Distraught and confused, the young man spirals into an inescapably vortex of sorrow and suffering from which it seems he may never return.
Petit’s ballet is a visceral journey through the turmoil of unrequited love and its terrible consequences, the painfully beautiful piece is set to Bach’s “Passacaglia” and “Fugue in C Minor”, with a libretto by Jean Cocteau,
La Sylphide tells the strange and tragic tale of James who awakes on the morning of his wedding to a find a stunning Sylphide, a beautiful fairy-like creature, at the foot of his bed. Supernatural forces are at play as James’s obsession with the mysterious apparition begins to sew discord between himself and his loving fiancée Effy.
August Bournonville’s ephemeral and captivating ballet is adapted by Eva Kloborg and Frank Andersen in this transformative production. The piece’s alluring score is performed live by the acclaimed English National Ballet Philharmonic.
This powerful double bill promises a spectacular evening of music and dance, playing a limited run at the London Coliseum from the 16th to 20th January 2018.
