    London Coliseum

Witness Verdi’s moving, lyrical opera Luisa Miller in a new ENO production directed by Barbora Horáková Joly when it runs at the London Coliseum for a strictly limited season.

A new production of Verdi's opera Luisa Miller plays at the London Coliseum for just six performances. This heart-rending tale of doomed love is directed by the award-winning Barbora Horáková Joly and runs from 12 February 2020.

Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi presented Luisa Miller - his 15th opera - in 1849. It is based on the German play Kabale und Liebe (Intrigue and Love) and is set to an Italian libretto by Salvadore Cammarano. The piece showcases Verdi’s signature sensitivity and lyricism, and has been treated to myriad revivals and recordings. Notably, Luciano Pavarotti sang the role of Rodolfo when it was presented at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1978.

Luisa and Rodolfo are both searching for happiness and believe they have found it with each other, but the class divide between them means their love is condemned. Rodolfo's father arranges a 'beneficial' marriage for his son, setting off a tragic downward spiral for the love-struck couple.

The ENO welcomes back Harewood Artist soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn (Tosca, Madama Butterfly) in the title role. She is joined by Olafur Sigurdarson as Miller and James Creswell as Count Walter.

Joly directs, her previous credits including Der Goldene Drache and Olympia. She was crowned winner in the Newcomer category at the 2018 International Opera Awards. Alexander Joel conducts. His prior performances include La Bohème for ENO’s last season.

Luisa Miller is a co-production with Oper Wuppertal. Witness this lovingly woven production when it plays at the London Coliseum for a strictly limited six performances from 12 February 2020.

    Audience Notes:
Fans of Verdi’s compassionate style will love ENO’s production of Luisa Miller, which is as beautiful - if not as famous - as Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata. Those who follow ENO’s programme may already have seen soprano Elizabeth Llewellyn perform, and will doubtless want to witness this phenomenally talented artist again.
