About Macbeth

When Macbeth’s ascension is prophesied by three witches, he and his wife embark on a bloody quest to secure the throne. They leave a trail of regicide, murder, manipulation and destruction in their wake, but no matter what, this couple clings to power - even as madness takes hold.

Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most haunting and psychologically brutal tragedies, and this revival at the Globe Theatre is an epic, blood-pumping production that feels all the more haunting in the open air.

Some of the most iconic moments from the entirety of Shakespeare’s work lie in Macbeth, and its characters have become the blueprint for many later plays, films and books. They include Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, a married couple. Macbeth is Thane of Glamis and a general in King Duncan’s army. Lady Macbeth is his ambitious wife who is not afraid to be ruthless in her pursuit of power.

Also key to the story are the three Witches, who meet Macbeth at the start of the play and prophesise that he will become king. But every prophecy has a twist, and Macbeth’s interpretation of their words contributes to his dramatic undoing…

Other characters include King Duncan, Banquo, Macduff and Lady Macduff, and Fleance.
