Mark Morris Dance Group and The Silk Road Ensemble: Layla and Majnun Tickets

    Sadler's Wells

Sixteen dancers, live instrumentalists and singers create a spectacular ensemble transporting audiences to Azerbaijan. This moving love story based on a traditional opera is brought to life in an epic scale, with stunning costumes and improvised music. It's a fitting backdrop to this tragic tale of a man driven mad by his love for a woman.

Mark Morris Dance Group have teamed with international music collective Silkroad to present a new version of the Middle Eastern love story Layla and Majnun, originally hailing from Bedouin, Arabia and written in the late 1100's.

In this production, 16 dancers tell the story of the young lovers who are forbidden from marrying by Layla’s father. She is eventually married off to another man, and Majnun, thought to be mad with unrequited love, devotes himself to a hermetic life. Isolated from the rest of the world, he writes poetry about his unwavering love for Layla. The two never see each other again and die without seeing their love fulfilled.

Mark Morris Dance Group was founded in New York City in 1980. The modern dance company has a permanent home in Brooklyn where they teach as well as having a busy international touring schedule. Silkroad is a music collective founded by cellist Yo-Yo Ma to foster radical, international collaborations in music. The Silkroad Ensemble is made up of musicians around the world who share their musical traditions with each other and to create meaningful collaborations.

This is the UK premiere of a ground-breaking collaborative work, drawing on a wide range of international cultural influences, that promises to be a stunning dance piece working with improvised live music. Playing for a strictly limited number of performances, Mark Morris Dance Group and The Silk Road Ensemble: Layla and Majnun runs at London's Sadler's Wells from 13 November to 17 November 2018.
