A charming and joyful true story

London’s first new West End theatre in 50 years opens with an explosion of colour and fantastical storytelling in Marvellous - a success story that’s almost too brilliant to be true!

Growing up in 1950s England, Neil Baldwin was encouraged to keep his expectations low. But Neil wasn’t one to give in to underestimation. Hitchhiking across the country, becoming a famous clown, getting an honorary degree from Keele University, or even earning a spot on the Queen’s New Year Honours list: Neil’s irrepressible spirit means his life has been anything but average.

Topped off with a stint as Stoke City’s kit man and accepting a BAFTA for a film inspired by his escapades, Neil became a local hero who proves that life really can be marvellous if you believe in yourself.

Neil Baldwin’s Marvellous play premiered at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme, his hometown, and now transfers to the brand-new Soho Place Theatre in London. It is written by Baldwin and Malcolm Clarke, and adapted for the stage by Baldwin and Theresa Heskins, who also directs.

Discover a life lived sensationally with Marvellous tickets; this funny, uplifting and inventive show is truly one of a kind.

'Marvellous' has already been made into a film and tells the true story of Neil Baldwin, a man with learning difficulties from the North of England who is determined to succeed in everything he sets out to do, be it join the circus, become a football manager or go to university. The play is very heartwarming. It did feel a tad long in places and some parts were silly/pantomime-esque but it was lots of fun and a real crowd pleaser, one that the whole family can enjoy. The end in particular had a lovely surprise which I won't spoil for those who may want to go. Neil is a real-life Forrest Gump meeting celebrities (including royalty) and his story is pretty amazing. I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be googling his name to find out more. We could do with more Neil Baldwin's in the world to spread much needed happiness and laughter!

Had no background knowledge of the show but it was fun and lighthearted and heart warming. Lots of silliness, a feeling of inclusion and strong message throughout. Brilliant small cast , excellent show

Didn’t realise it was a true story, and the actual Neil Baldwin was at the performance! Was good fun, prepare to engage with the actors and maybe get a bit wet… A bit muddled in sections (for me) but had nice pace and good acting. Great to see a mix of actors on the stage and the range of characters played by 7 people. Loved the making dinner scene!

Just really lovely - there is no other word for it, the actors are all amazing - and you might get to meet Mr Baldwin himself.
