The Other Palace

James Phillips presents a new play directed by Les Miserables’ John Caird, following the enigmatic imagination of one of the world’s greatest contemporary designers, Alexander McQueen. Set on a London night, a mysterious girl breaks into McQueen’s home to steal a dress. But when she is caught, instead of calling the police, McQueen decides to give her a chance and the pair embark on a magical, life-changing adventure.

John Caird (Les Miserables) directs an all-new play written by James Phillips, detailing the life of popular fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. Part-fiction, part-biopic, McQueen delves deep into the visionary imagination and dark dreamland of one of fashion’s greatest contemporary artists. Opening for a limited time at London’s St James Theatre, McQueen is the fairy-tale landscape of McQueen’s iconic genius.

Set on a singular London night, McQueen tells the story of a mysterious young girl who has been watching the designer’s house from a tree nearby, eventually plucking up the courage to break in and steal a dress in the hope of becoming someone special. Instead of calling the police, McQueen takes a chance and lets her stay. Soon, the pair embark on a magical adventure where they discover that between them, they may find the comfort and beauty that they both so desperately crave. A moving, poetic and enchanting play, McQueen invites us all to discover the beauty in the smaller things.

Stephen Wight (Bluestone 42) stars as Alexander McQueen, opposite US screen star Dianna Agron (Glee, The Family) as Dahlia. Further cast members include Tracy-Ann Oberman (EastEnders, New Tricks, Friday Night Dinner) as Isabella Blow, Laura Rees as Arabella and David Shaw-Parker as Mr Hitchcock. Directed by Caird, McQueen features design by award-winning David Farley, choreography by Christopher Marney, video design by Timothy Bird, lighting design by David Howe and sound design by John Leonard.

Combining an enigmatic dreamlike tale with sharp, choreographed catwalk routines, McQueen is a celebration of one of fashion’s most loved artists, conceived by James Phillips. Further productions of Phillips’ include City Stories and Hidden in the Sand. An unmissable production, McQueen opens at the St James Theatre London in May 2015 for a limited season.
