Based on the hit 2004 American teen comedy film of the same name, Mean Girls the Musical features a book by original screenplay writer Tina Fey, music by Fey’s husband and three-time Emmy Award winner Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Neil Benjamin (Legally Blonde).
The film, which originally starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried, has spawned countless internet memes, catchphrases and even its own date in the calendar – October 3rd, if you didn’t know!
Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina's reign, she learns the hard way that you can't cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.
Producers Sonia Friedman, Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson and Paramount Pictures are reportedly scouting a London theatre for an opening in Spring 2021. Friedman is one of the most prolific producers in London theatre, responsible for shows including Harry Potter & the Cursed Child, Dreamgirls and The Book of Mormon.
Mean Girls opened on Broadway in April 2018, following out-of-town try-outs in Washington, DC in October 2017. The Broadway production garnered twelve Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.
No casting has been announced for a London production yet, but Erika Henningsen, who originated the lead role of Cady Heron, has expressed interest about crossing the pond for the London premiere. A London theatre and performance dates will be announced soon, but the show is rumoured to be heading to the Savoy Theatre in Spring 2021. This musical is one of the most highly-anticipated musicals coming soon to the West End.
