What is the play North by Northwest about?

Roger Thornhill is just an ordinary man. But when the advertising executive mistimes a phone call to his mother while visiting a New York hotel, a case of mistaken identity plunges him deep into a Cold War conspiracy. Believed to be ‘George Kaplan’, an agent with the United States Intelligence Agency, Thornhill is kidnapped and thrown into an unfamiliar world of espionage, aeroplanes and subterfuge. Evading his pursuers, Thornhill goes on the run, and meets stunning femme fatale Eve Kendall, who may have more to her than meets the eye…

North By Northwest is based on the 1959 film of the same name, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and written by Ernest Lehman, which starred Cary Grant. A critical success, the film was nominated for three Academy Awards and has had a huge influence on subsequent films in the spy genre, including the James Bond series. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, in 1995 North By Northwest was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry for it’s cultural significance.

This dazzling new adaptation from Emma Rice’s Wise Children is brought to life by just six actors, turning the classic suspense story on its head in a hilarious new reworking that is “fizzing with silliness and energy” (Far Out) and filled with hijinks, quick changes and a stunning 1950s soundtrack. A “delight for fans of the film as well as those unfamiliar with it” (British Theatre Guide) this fresh take on a classic is not to be missed!
