A Lyric Hammersmith and HOME production, Othellomacbeth interweaves two of Shakespeare's most dramatic plays. This unique show features seven deaths and a cast of nine who play 14 characters.

Two of Shakespeare's most monumental and iconic plays are brought together in new show Othellomacbeth at Lyric Hammersmith. Expect fourteen characters, seven deaths and more masterful wordsmithery than you could shake a cross-gartered stocking at.

Both Othello and Macbeth were written over 400 years ago, yet the rate at which they continue to be revived, studied and quoted shows no signs of slowing down. Shining examples of the Bard’s powers of poetry, tragedy and eloquence, they remain as captivating as ever. Combined, they become Othellomacbeth. “Audiences can expect to see a faithful telling of both stories,” according to director Jude Christian, “but a bit of a narrative twist as the two stories start to meet". What’s more, with a cast of five women and four men, the female characters enjoy a stronger focus in this retelling.

This bold show is a Lyric Hammersmith and HOME production and is supported by The Linbury Trust. Director Jude Christian’s credits include the sell-out Royal Court production My Mum's a Twat (co-directed with Vicky Featherstone) and 2015’s Lela & Co.

Basia Binkowska designs the show, after being named winner of the highly prestigious Linbury Prize in 2017. Lighting design is by Joshua Pharo who has worked with theatres across the UK from the Royal Opera House to Chichester Festival Theatre. Nick Gill adds his sound design to the mix, having previously composed for Cinoherni Studios.

A stellar cast of nine includes Ery Nzaramba as Othello/Banquo and Caroline Faber in the role of Lady Macbeth. Kirsten Foster is the ill-fated Desdemona while Sandy Grierson plays the part of Cassio/Macbeth.

An ambitious Shakespearean mash-up, Othellomacbeth promises strong female characters, a unique piece of storytelling and visceral staging. The production plays at London’s Lyric Hammersmith from 5 October to 3 November 2018.
