Duncan Macmillan's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s thrilling Rosmersholm</em receives its premiere at Duke of York's Theatre, starring Hayley Atwell as the liberal-minded Rebecca West alongside Tom Burke as the conflicted head of the household Rosmer.
Duncan Macmillan's stunning and resonant adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Rosmersholm premieres at Duke of York's Theatre. Starring Tom Burke and Hayley Atwell, this revival of a masterpiece charts love, politics, past and future, with plenty of twists thrown in for good measure. The production marks the 10th collaboration between director Ian Rickson and Sonia Friedman Productions. It runs in the West End from 24 April 2019.
Rosmersholm is positioned against the backdrop of a looming election, an atmosphere of uncertainty and a bloodthirsty press. In the grand house of an influential dynasty, John Rosmer holds the future in his hands. As he wanders the line between idealism and a painful past, he finds himself ever more torn.
Tom Burke stars as Rosmer, the conflicted former clergyman and owner of the manor. As well as having appeared in TV series The Musketeers and Strike, Burke has starred in 2016 production of The Deep Blue Sea at the National Theatre.
Hayley Atwell stars as free-thinking Rebecca West, one of Ibsen's most formidable heroines. Atwell has appeared in the film Captain America and the miniseries Howards End, while her recent stage credits include and Dry Powder at Hampstead Theatre and Measure for Measure at the Donmar Warehouse.
Sharing the stage with them are Lucy Briers (Wolf Hall), Giles Terera (Hamilton), Jake Fairbrother (Lady from the Sea) and Peter Wight (The Birthday Party).
Set and costumes are courtesy of Rae Smith, with lighting by Neil Austin and music by Stephen Warbeck. Sound is by Gregory Clarke and casting is the work of Amy Ball CDG.
Award-winning writer and director Duncan Macmillan has a glittering resume of stage works to his name, including the highly acclaimed People Places and Things and Every Brilliant Thing. He has accrued an array of awards throughout his career and has twice been nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Play.
Director Ian Rickson was the Artistic Director of the Royal Court between 1998 and 2006. His directorial credits include Hamlet at the Young Vic and Translations at the National Theatre.
