Overview

John Betjeman, one of the country’s most revered poets, has his life and work celebrated in the new play Sand in the Sandwiches which arrives at the Theatre Royal Haymarket as part of an extensive UK tour, with performances for a limited run from 30th May 2017 to 3rd June 2017.

Sand in the Sandwiches celebrates a great poet who was renowned for his passions, his dedication and his incredible work, just as much as he was for his laughter and light verse.

Sand in the Sandwiches embraces John Betjeman’s own love of nostalgia and playful impertinence, as it tells the story of the great poet’s life, from boyhood to teenage years, all the way to life as Britain’s most high profile poets. Sand in the Sandwiches is both a highly entertaining and insightful look into the life of John Betjeman.

In this one man show, Edward Fox takes the lead role of the man himself, giving a fantastic portrayal of the iconic poet, spectacularly bringing his notorious wit and lively personality to life.

Edward Fox is a prolific actor of both stage and screen, being best known for his starring roles in classic British films such as The Day of the Jackal, A Bridge Too Far and Oh! What a Lovely Way.

Fox has received great acclaimed throughout his career, including being awarded two BAFTAs, one for Best Supporting Actor in The Go-Between and a second for Best Actor in Edward and Mrs Simpson. In 2003, he was also awarded an OBE for his services to theatre and British cinema.

Sand in the Sandwiches is written by the Emmy-Award-winning screen writer and playwright Hugh Whitemore, who is best known for Stevie, Pack of Lies and Breaking the Code.

Sand in the Sandwiches is an exciting portrayal of the life of John Betjeman and was performed at the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket on 30th May 2017 and continued to 3rd June 2017.

I didn’t know what to expect from ‘Sand in the Sandwiches’ but was pleasantly surprised at seeing the 80 year old Edward Fox on stage as the poet laureate John Betjmann. His monologues were effortless and his diction was perfect. Some parts did drag somewhat (it is very hard to command an audience on your own for just under two hours!) but Edward Fox did very well and gave a fine performance. The poetry was a pleasure to hear being read by such a stalwart actor. It’s a shame it was only on at this theatre for a week, however I’m pleased I caught it.
