    To mark the 25th anniversary of celebrated choreographer Kenneth MacMillan’s death, the English National Ballet bring a stirring double bill to the London Coliseum in early 2018. Pairing MacMillan’s stunning Song of the Earth with August Bournonville’s alluring romantic ballet La Sylphide this unique production promises an unforgettable night of dance for London audiences.

    The English National Ballet and Philharmonic present a scintillating double bill of Kenneth MacMillan’s haunting masterpiece Song of the Earth alongside August Bournonville’s beloved ballet La Sylphide. The tantalising pairing premieres at Manchester Palace Theatre, before going on to be presented at the London Coliseum from a limited run in January 2018.

    Taking inspiration from Mahler’s poignant song cycle "Das Lied von der Erde", MacMillan fuses music, Chinese poetry and choreography in a stunning maelstrom of movement and emotion. The piece reflects on the both the fragility of life and the contestant ebb and flow from death to rebirth.

    Three central dancers act as the ephemeral conduits for MacMillan’s stunning exploration of love, loss and mortality; A man, a woman and a mysterious messenger. The piece was first performed in 1965, deviating drastically from MacMillan’s previous work, the shocking and emotive choreography astonishing critics and audiences alike.

    La Sylphide follows the story of James, who awakes in morning of his wedding to his sweet fiancée Effy to encounter a strange and alluring Sylphide, a supernatural spirit of the air.

    His obsession with the captivating creature sets in motion a tragic series of events where joy transmutes to sorrow, fellowship to betrayal as James’s world begins failing apart around him.

    Eva Kloborg and Frank Andersen recreate August Bournonville’s enchanting romantic ballet in this arresting production. The touching score is played live by the acclaimed English National Ballet Philharmonic.

    This exhilarating double bill marks the 25th anniversary of choreographer Kenneth MacMillan’s death. This stunning pairing plays for a seven evening performances from the 9th to 13th January 2018 at the London Coliseum.
