    Ambassadors Theatre

Joanna Murray-Smith’s thriller Switzerland runs at Ambassadors Theatre, weaving a treacherous tale that features the great novelist Patricia Highsmith and a mysterious visitor.

Ustinov Studios’ production of Joanna Murray-Smith’s play Switzerland transfers to London’s West End. This captivating portrait of novelist Patricia Highsmith explores the mechanics of writing a thriller, framed within the imagined meeting of the author and a publishing envoy in pursuit of a final instalment of The Talented Mr Ripley. Following its run at Theatre Royal Bath, the two-hander plays at Ambassadors Theatre.

The great writer Highsmith is eking out her lonely days in the Swiss Alps, surrounded by cats and books. When a polished young gentleman arrives at her door, she listens as he attempts to persuade her to pen one more book about the menacing manipulator Tom Ripley. As day breaks, a creeping realisation asserts itself: this young man has a far more sinister purpose.

Joanna Murray-Smith is an award-winning playwright and novelist whose works for the stage include Scenes from a Marriage, The Female of the Species and Three Little Words. She won the 2004 Fringe First Award among many other accolades.

Highsmith is played by Phyllis Logan, the award-winning actress who is perhaps most famous for her role as Mrs Hughes (later Carson) in Downton Abbey. Calum Finlay plays New York publishing envoy Edward Ridgeway. His theatre credits include the role of Rosencrantz in the West End transfer of the Almeida's Hamlet.

Director Lucy Bailey was the co-founder and co-artistic director of The Print Room between 2009 and 2012. Recent directing credits include Witness for the Prosecution at London County Hall.

Switzerland premiered in Australia in 2015, earning itself the title of Best New Australian Work at the Sydney Theatre Awards.
