The Animals and Children Took to the Streets Tickets

    Lyric Hammersmith

Pioneering theatre company 1927 bring their multimedia show The Animals and Children Took to the Streets to the Lyric Hammersmith. Its dystopian themes and graphic novel aesthetic ensure it stands head and shoulders above the crowd.

Late one night, Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive at Bayou Mansions. The only people in the entire city who dare to go near the place are those that live there. The pair’s arrival indicates that things are going to change, but will they be for the better, or the worse? The Animals and Children Took to the Streets arrives at the Lyric Hammersmith for a strictly limited season.

In this dystopian world of social unrest and child pirates set in a neighbourhood plagued by poverty, a story of inequality unfolds with children and young people leading the call for change. It is a prescient message for our times, with striking animations and music complimenting the Weimar cabaret-inspired look.

The Animals and Children by theatre company 1927 first opened in 2010 at the Battersea Arts Centre, where it swiped an off-West End Award before transferring to the National Theatre in 2011, where it received critical acclaim. It was performed regularly through 2013, and it returns once more to London this year.

The production is written and directed by Suzanne Andrade, who co-founded 1927 in 2005, alongside visual artist Paul Barritt, who created the film and animation for the show. Company member Lillian Henley provides musical accompaniment that further develops the world of the play. Other shows by 1927 include Between the Devil, The Deep Blue Sea, Golem and The Magic Flute. The company regularly work internationally, so this UK run is a rare treat for progressive theatre audiences.

Running for a strictly limited season at the Lyric Hammersmith, The Animals and Children Took to the Streets is a visual feast that’s richly subversive to boot, playing from 19 February 2019, with a press performance on 22 February 2019.
