    Royal Court Theatre

Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone leads a new production of Mark Ravenhill’s The Cane at the Royal Court Theatre, rounding off their highly anticipated 2018 season. Following the story of Edward, a teacher who is hounded after 45 years of popularity as a teacher, the production runs at the venue at the end of the year.

“It will be the biggest send off any teacher has ever had. No teacher is as loved.”

Mark Ravenhill returns to the Royal Court Theatre with his latest gripping play, The Cane. Playing a strictly limited season at the London venue, the production marks the end of the 2018 season, which includes a variety of new works from emerging and established writers.

The Cane follows Edward, a dedicated teacher of 45 years, who is looking forward to celebrating his impending retirement. But his home is under attack. As a mob of angered students gather, bricks are thrown through windows and Edward and his wife are forced to hide inside their house for six days. Suddenly, their estranged daughter arrives with hard-hitting questions of her own.

Asking “why would they attack the most popular teacher in the school?”, the drama explores education and the roles of those who are supposed to guide us at our most impressionable ages.

Artistic Director of the Royal Court Vicky Featherstone directs, with multiple credits at the venue including Gundog, My Mum’s a Twat and X. Further theatre productions include the Olivier Award-winning Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, as well as What if Women Ruled the World? and Wall of Death.

The Cane is written by Mark Ravenhill, whose other works include Shopping and F*cking, Mother Clap’s Mollyhouse and Citizenship. The production comes as part of the theatre’s 2018 season, which also includes Instructions for Correct Assembly, Pity and Ear for Eye.

The production runs at Jerwood Downstairs at the Royal Court Theatre from 6 December 2018 to 26 January 2019, with a press night on 12 December 2018.
