    Sadler's Wells

Life and death are perennial themes in performance, but this work by Greek dance maker Dimitris Papaioannou takes a new look at these ideas. Inspired by classical art and contemporary design, he uses astonishing stagecraft and the wonder that is the human body to create striking, evocative images on stage at Sadler's Wells.

Hailing from Athens, choreographer, visual artist and polymath Dimitris Papaioannou brings his 2017 work The Great Tamer to Sadler’s Wells as part of Dance Umbrella. Inspired by classical art and literature, ten dancers perform within a surreal and shifting landscape that is both powerful and striking.

Papaioannou trained as a fine artist before founding Edafos Dance Theatre in 1986. Through his own company, he brought to life visionary works that blended performance art, physical theatre and dance. He was the creator of the opening and closing ceremonies at the Athens 2004 Olympics, then went on to produce large-scale, abstract performance works. The Great Tamer is his first international touring commission, which will be performed to audiences around the world for 2 years.

This is the first time Papaioannou performs at Sadler’s Wells. He has created 25 different performance pieces, ranging in size from thousands of performers to much more intimate works. Though The Great Tamer is comparatively small, there are huge ideas at work in the piece performed by Pavlina Andriopoulou, Costas Chrysafidis, Ektor Liatsos, Ioannis Michos, Evangelia Randou, Kalliopi Simou, Drossos Skotis, Christos Strinopoulos, Yorgos Tsiantoulas, Alex Vangelis.

With only two striking performances, this renowned performance maker’s work The Great Tamer plays at London's Sadler's Wells from 16 October to 17 October 2018.
