Margaret Atwood’s beloved modern classic, The Handmaid’s Tale, is transformed into a stunning opera that brings the dystopian Gilead to life with visceral detail.Set in the dystopian Republic of Gilead, where women have been stripped of their rights and classified by their fertility, Handmaid Offred dreams of escaping her role in this oppressive new society.
Margaret Atwood's Booker Prize-nominated novel has found a resurgence in popularity with the award-winning Hulu television series, which is the latest in a long line of creative adaptations. First staged in 1990, Poul Ruders’ opera features a minimalist score inspired by medieval chanting and gospel music which will draw audiences into the brutal realities of Atwood’s world.
The production is directed by ENO’s Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon and conducted by Joana Carneiro, who specialises in contemporary music. Casting includes mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as Offred, soprano Emma Bell as Aunt Lydia, and John Findon as Luke.
Depicting state control and the strength of resistance to startling effect, The Handmaid’s Tale opera tickets are certain to be popular amongst fans of the seminal classic. The production opens at the London Coliseum on 4 April 2022.
