About The King and I

In 1862, young widow and governess Anna travels from America to Siam when the King summons her to tutor his many children. The pair soon find themselves at odds as cultural differences collide, and a surprising relationship blossoms.

One of the greatest shows to be born in the mid-century Broadway boom, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s (Oklahoma!; The Sound of Music) fifth musical delights with an enchanting score including “Whistle a Happy Tune” and “Shall We Dance”.

The King and I’s Award Winning Creative Team

The King and I at the Dominion Theatre is directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher and features a world-class company of over 50 West End and Broadway performers, accompanied by a full-scale orchestra. It opened at New York’s Lincoln Center and won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival.

Bartlett Sher has brought some of the most beloved Golden Age musicals to new audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, and his revival of My Fair Lady played an acclaimed summer season at the London Coliseum in 2022 before heading on tour. His hugely successful, Tony and Olivier Award-winning stage adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird also played to rapt audiences in the West End’s Gielgud Theatre.

Helen George in The King and I

Call the Midwife’s Helen George stars as Anna in The King and I after playing the role on UK tour. George is best known as upbeat, friendly midwife Trixie Franklin in the BBC drama series, and has also appeared on stage in Love in Idleness and After Miss Julie.

George is joined in the musical by Darren Lee as The King, who also appeared on the UK tour. Lee is an actor and choreographer who has appeared on Broadway in several shows including Guys and Dolls, Allegiance and Kiss Me Kate.
