      Apollo Theatre

Alan Bennett brings his hilarious comedy The Madness of George III to London’s Apollo Theatre, for a strictly limited eleven-week run that will officially open January 23rd 2012. Starring Olivier Award-winning actor David Haig as the troubled King, the play follows his many successes that are marred by his regular outbursts of unbridled insanity. Subjected to the cruel treatments of the time, The Madness of George III is a melancholy, sympathetic play injected with Bennett’s signature humour.

Award-winning playwright Alan Bennett’s triumphant comedy The Madness of George III transfers to the Apollo Theatre London, following a sell-out run at the Theatre Royal Bath. Playing for a limited season only, acclaimed actor David Haig stars as the troubled King. Originally premiering at the National Theatre in 1991, The Madness of George III has also been adapted into a successful film starring Nigel Hawthorne and Helen Mirren. Opening January 23rd, this is a West End treat not to be missed.

The Madness of George III follows the sympathetic story of the third Hanoverian monarch of Great Britain, who had a string of accomplishments to his name. King George III was responsible for founding the Royal Academy of Arts, fathered fifteen children and was a strong advocate of science, literature and music. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, George III is remembered for enduring bouts of unbridled lunacy. With the appalling medical treatments of the day, he was regularly subjected to physical pain in the name of curing, and had to deal with a power struggle with his scheming son.

Featuring a stellar cast, The Madness of George III stars Olivier Award-winning actor David Haig in the title role. Haig has an immense number of stage and screen credits to his name, including Our Country’s Good, Loot, Mary Poppins and Yes, Prime Minister. His film appearances include The Thin Blue Line, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Doctor Who. Further cast members include Beatie Edney as Queen Charlotte, Christopher Keegan as the Prince of Wales, William Belchambers as the Duke of York, Charlotte Asprey as Lady Pembroke, Ed Cooper Clarke as Captain Fitzroy and Orlando James as Captain Greville.

Directed by Christopher Luscombe (The Comedy of Errors, When We Are Married), The Madness of George III is a 1991 play by the award-winning Alan Bennett, who has penned successes such as The History Boys and Talking Heads. The production includes lighting design by Oliver Fenwick and sound design by Mic Pool. An intensely moving but hilariously witty play, The Madness of George III opens at the West End’s Apollo Theatre for a limited run ending March 31st 2012.
