Playing a strictly limited season at the Lyric Hammersmith, the production follows a group of Dublin residents who hide from the violence sweeping the streets around them. What is the future of Ireland?

Th’ time is rotten ripe for revolution…

Olivier Award-winning director Sean Holmes recreates Sean O’Casey’s masterpiece play The Plough and the Stars at the Lyric Hammersmith. After a sold-out season at the Abbey Theatre, which featured as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations of the 1916 Easter Rising, and successful tours across the US and Ireland, the production runs at the London venue for limited performances.

Set amidst the chaos of the Easter Rising, The Plough and the Stars is the tale of ordinary people’s lives being ripped apart by idealism at the time. Designed to resonate with a contemporary audience, the play follows residents of a Dublin shelter as they hide from violence that is rife in the streets.

With a revolution shaping around them, the question must be asked – what kind of Ireland awaits them? The Plough and the Stars was originally performed at the Abbey Theatre in 1926, and has since enjoyed multiple revivals. Presented in a co-production with the theatre, the production unleashes modern day references for a modern day audience.

The Plough and the Stars is directed by the Lyric Hammersmith’s Artistic Director Sean Holmes (Shopping & F***ing, Terror), with set design by Jon Bausor, costume design by Catherine Fay, lighting design by Paul Keogan and sound design by Philip Stewart.

Playing for a limited season at the Lyric Hammersmith, The Plough and the Stars runs from 15 March to 7 April 2018, with a press night on 20 March 2018.
