Sue Townsend’s best-selling book about teenage angst, family struggles, and unrequited love is adapted into a musical. The show is centred around 13-year-old Adrian Mole, a hilarious and hapless teen, is one of the most enduring comedy characters of all time. Following acclaimed performances in the UK, the show will play at London’s Ambassadors Theatre from 15 June.
Adrian Mole is a tortured poet and misunderstood intellectual. Aged 13 and ¾, he is also hapless and spotty. Through his hilarious diaries, Adrian tells of family struggles, teen angst, and unrequited love – things we can all relate to. Set in 1980s Leicester, this musical brings Adrian’s story to life for a whole new generation of theatregoers.
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole was first published in 1982, and has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, as well as spawning seven sequel novels. The books have been adapted for the stage, radio, and television.
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 ¾ The Musical has a book and lyrics written by Jake Brunger, music and lyrics by Pippa Cleary, direction by Luke Sheppard (In the Heights, and choreography by Rebecca Howell (Man of la Mancha).
The role of Adrian will be alternated by Nicholas Antoniou-Tibbitts, Aaron Gelkoff, Michael Hawkins and Rufus Kampa; Pandora is shared by Molly May Gibson, Matilda Hopkins, Rebecca Nardin and Riya Vyas.
Making up the adult cast are Amy Ellen Richardson (Sweet Charity), Andrew Langtree (Groundhog Day), Ian Talbot (Hairspray), Holly Ashton (A Study in Scarlet), Lara Denning (Matilda), Mathew Craig (Miss Saigon), Rosemary Ashe (The Witches of Eastwick) and John Hopkins (The One).
The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 ¾ The Musical is set to be a hilarious musical written for a brand new generation of Mole fans. It plays at the Ambassadors Theatre from 15 June – 12 October.
