    The Southbury Child Tickets

Tradition vs tolerance in a small-town parish

Acclaimed writer Stephen Beresford tackles tradition versus modernity in a new comedy about a vicar clashing with his community. Book The Southbury Child tickets to catch the BAFTA Award winner’s darkly funny new play at the Bridge Theatre

David Highland is a quick witted and often drunk vicar who has kept his parish happy with a mix of charm and strong will. But when he denies a parishioner’s request to have Disney balloons at their child’s funeral, he suddenly finds himself at odds with the community. As his own family breaks down around him, David faces a crisis of belief and reputation.

Stephen Beresford’s (The Last of the Haussmans) play about faith, community and tradition in a swiftly changing world premiered at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2022. It is directed by Bridge Theatre Co-Founder Nicholas Hytner (Bridge: Young Marx; Straight Line Crazy).

The Southbury Child London cast includes Olivier Award winner Alex Jennings (The Habit of Art; My Fair Lady), Jo Herbert, Phoebe Nicholls, Sarah Twomey, Racheal Ofori, Hermione Gulliford, Josh Finan, Jack Greenlees and Holly Atkins.

Quick-witted, funny and deeply human, don’t miss The Southbury Child play, in London for a strictly limited season.

A very good dark comedy brilliantly acted by Alex Jennings and an ensemble cast. At times quite difficult to watch but the standard of writing and acting is of the best quality. Not one for children as quite bad language throughout but definitely worth watching.

A very enjoyable play that deals with some interesting themes with complex characters, all very well acted by a great ensemble. Alex Jennings was superb, but so were the supporting cast, expecially Phoebe Nichols.

Lots thrown at you in this play. It is a very clever look the clash between old traditional values and moderns "wants". A rollercoaster of emotions and lots to think about - but also very funny. A couple of slightly hesitant performances (it was a preview) but with stalwarts such as Phoebe Nicholls and Alex Jennings you are always in safe hands. Many get to 5* with another view.

Preview of a new play, transferred from Chichester. Unbelievably good cast. The always exceptional Alex Jennings gives a brailliant nuanced performance as a country vicar trying to deal with the vagaries of the modern world without losing his integrity. Funny, sad and thought provoking.
