Tradition vs tolerance in a small-town parish

Acclaimed writer Stephen Beresford tackles tradition versus modernity in a new comedy about a vicar clashing with his community. Book The Southbury Child tickets to catch the BAFTA Award winner’s darkly funny new play at the Bridge Theatre

David Highland is a quick witted and often drunk vicar who has kept his parish happy with a mix of charm and strong will. But when he denies a parishioner’s request to have Disney balloons at their child’s funeral, he suddenly finds himself at odds with the community. As his own family breaks down around him, David faces a crisis of belief and reputation.

Stephen Beresford’s (The Last of the Haussmans) play about faith, community and tradition in a swiftly changing world premiered at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2022. It is directed by Bridge Theatre Co-Founder Nicholas Hytner (Bridge: Young Marx; Straight Line Crazy).

The Southbury Child London cast includes Olivier Award winner Alex Jennings (The Habit of Art; My Fair Lady), Jo Herbert, Phoebe Nicholls, Sarah Twomey, Racheal Ofori, Hermione Gulliford, Josh Finan, Jack Greenlees and Holly Atkins.

Quick-witted, funny and deeply human, don’t miss The Southbury Child play, in London for a strictly limited season.
