Overview

From 1959 to 1964, television series The Twilight Zone aired across America’s small screens. The sci-fi show incorporated socio-political commentary and the creator’s experience in the military, growing in cult status despite mixed reviews and two cancellations. Running for 5 seasons, the popular series has since been adapted into a film, with two television revivals.

The Twilight Zone is based on stories by Rod Serling, Charles Beaumont and Richard Matheson. Serling was a keen performer from a young age, also heavily engaged in politics. At university after the war, he began writing for radio then moved to television, but was often frustrated by executive decisions to tone down the controversial aspects of his writing. He made sure that The Twilight Zone was exempt from rigid constraints, and included his political views, veiled by a sci-fi and fantasy setting.

Now, American playwright Anne Washburn brings audiences her stage adaptation, following a controversial 2012 production of Mr Burns that saw a post-apocalyptic reimagining of an episode of The Simpsons. The Twilight Zone is directed by award-winning theatre and opera director Richard Jones, with a cast including Oliver Alvin-Wilson, Franc Ashman, Adrianna Bertola, Lizzy Connolly, Amy Griffiths, Neil Haigh, Cosmo Jarvis, John Marquez, Matthew Needham and Sam Swainsbury.

The Twilight Zone features set design by Paul Steinberg, costume design by Nicky Gillibrand, lighting design Mimi Jordan Sherin and sound design by Shutt, with original music and sound by Sarah Angliss and movement direction by Aletta Collins.

With the original show spanning many hours of material and this production being the world premiere, the play’s story and contents have provoked much speculation. Washburn’s previous work may hold some clues to her approach, but the theatre is giving little away.

The production runs for a limited season from 5 December 2017 to 27 January 2018. The intimate Almeida Theatre has a committed, regular audience and after Washburn’s divisive production 6 years ago The Twilight Zone is sure to draw a crowd.
