Uncle Vanya Tickets
Olivier Award-winning Maly Drama Theatre return to the West End with two of their most acclaimed productions. Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya plays a strictly limited season at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, following Vanya and Sonya as their quiet lives are disrupted by the return of professor Serebryakov and his glamorous wife, Yelena.
One of Chekhov’s major plays, the popular work is both a funny and tragic look at unrequited love and the disparity between urban and rural life. The story follows Vanya and his niece Sonya, who manage the country estate of an ageing professor who rarely visits. But this time, Professor Serebryakov is returning, bringing with him his sophisticated young wife, Yelena. The arrival of the pair turns the household upside down and, true to real life, nothing is quite the same afterwards.
Uncle Vanya was first performed by the Moscow Art Theatre in 1899, and has been revived across the world. This production is directed Maly Drama Theatre’s Artistic Director, the award-winning Lev Dodin. Dodin has run the theatre since 1982 and his work has been described by Peter Brook as ‘the finest ensemble theatre in Europe’.
The production is presented by Oliver King and Ekaterina Kashyntseva for Belka Productions, with the support of Roman Abramovich, Sir Leonard Blavatnik, Yuri Shefler and Alexander Machkevitch.
Cast members include Sergey Kuryshev as the titular character, alongside Ekatirina Tarasova as Sonya, Igor Ivanov as Professor Serebryakov and Ksenia Rappoport as Yelena, as well as Igor Chernevich, Ivan Chepura, Natalia Akimova, Oleg Ryazanstev and Vera Bykova.
Widely considered as the definitive production of Chekhov’s play, Uncle Vanya plays at the Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited season, running from 15 to 17 May 2018. This is a fantastic chance to catch this remarkable company’s work without having to travel to Russia!
Uncle Vanya will be performed in Russian with English surtitles.
