Critically-acclaimed double-bill Untold Stories transfers to London’s Duchess Theatre, following a sell-out season at the National Theatre. Alex Jennings reprises his acclaimed role as renowned playwright Alan Bennett, delivering two autobiographical recollections from his packed back-catalogue of work.

Nadia Fall (Future Conditional, The Doctor’s Dilemma) directs Hymn, a sincerely touching memoir of music in childhood. Featuring an evocative score by George Fenton, Hymn is a nostalgic piece that relives Bennett’s memories of concerts at Leeds Hall and his father teaching him violin. Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys) directs Cocktail Sticks, which is often described as Bennett’s most moving piece. Drawing from Bennett’s memoir, A Life Like Other People’s, the play sees a son speaking to his dead father as his mother yearns for a different life.

Olivier Award-winning actor Alex Jennings stars once more as the famous playwright, following extensive appearances at the National Theatre, including Collaborators, Present Laughter, The Alchemist, Stuff Happens and an award-winning performance in The Winter’s Tale. Jennings also received an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, for his acclaimed performance in My Fair Lady. Further cast members include Derek Hutchinson, Gabrielle Lloyd, Maggie McCarthy and Jeff Rawle.

Alan Bennett is the well-known playwright whose many works include The History Boys, The Habit of Art, The Madness of King George III and Talking Heads. Directed collectively by Nadia Fall and Nicholas Hytner, Untold Stories features lighting design by Tom Snell and sound design by Mike Walker and John Leonard. A hugely touching collection of plays, Untold Stories transfers to the West End’s Duchess Theatre from March 2013.
