Upstart Crow Tickets

Ben Elton’s acclaimed Shakespearean sitcom Upstart Crow settles into its natural home, the West End. Starring David Mitchell as the Bard, this comedic new play opens at the Gielgud Theatre on 7 February 2020.

Shakespeare himself makes a welcome return to the stage in 2020 as BBC sitcom Upstart Crow storms the West End. Starring David Mitchell as the Bard, this new play from Ben Elton promises a rip-roaringly good time as audiences drop in on the escapades of Will & co.

The year is 1605, and William Shakespeare isn’t quite the legendary playwright we all know and love. King James has just rubbished his latest work, his daughters have gone wild, and his house has turned into a refuge for everyone and their dog.

As Will struggles to cling onto his good reputation and secure his place in the theatrical history books, will he be able to write the ultimate masterwork? Or is he doomed to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune…

Comedian David Mitchell makes his West End debut as William Shakespeare, after playing the role to acclaim on television. A regular on panel shows Have I Got News For You and Mock the Week, he is best known for Peep Show.

Mitchell will be joined in Upstart Crow at the Gielgud Theatre by Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan, who plays Kate, Helen Monks (Raised by Wolves) as Susanna, Rob Rouse (The Friday Night Project) as Bottom and Steve Speirs as Burbage and Mark Heap as Dr. John Hall.

Upstart Crow first aired on BBC Two in 2016 and celebrated its third season in 2018. It is the brainchild of BAFTA Award winning writer Ben Elton, whose credits include The Young Ones and Blackadder. On stage it is directed by current Birmingham Rep Artistic Director, Sean Foley (The Man in the White Suit).

With more twists, turns and laughs than Twelfth Night, Upstart Crow in the West End is sure to have you looking at Shakespeare in a whole new light. Catch the show in 2020, when it runs from 7 February for a limited season.
