    Almeida Theatre

Multiple award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett adapts Maxim Gorky’s Vassa, which portrays an aristocratic family in turmoil as the Russian Revolution approaches, threatening to destroy their dynasty.

With Vassa, Genesis Future Directors Award-winner Tinuke Craig (The Colour Purple, Dirty Butterfly) makes her Almeida Theatre debut, directing this contemporary adaptation of Maxim Gorky’s savagely funny depiction of a family dynasty falling apart.

Adapted from Gorky’s Vassa Zheleznova by multiple award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett (King Charles III, Albion), Vassa focuses on one woman who is trying to keep her chaotic family together while the threat of the Russian Revolution approaches. A dying father, a spying son, a thieving uncle and a fortune worth squabbling over. This is a family with issues.

Stage and TV veteran Siobahn Redmond (Top Girls, RSC's Imperium) plays Vassa. She leads an exciting cast that includes Alexandra Downling (Romeo and Juliet, Richard III), Arthur Hughes (The Cherry Orchard, Our Town) and Amber James (Two Gentlemen of Verona, Titus Andronicus).

With the combination of Craig’s directing and Bartlett’s writing, as well as production design by Fly Davis (Macbeth, The Winter’s Tale), Vassa is set to be an intelligent, funny and compelling experience at the Almeida Theatre.

Oddly compelling but completely insane with limited point and not a single likeable character.
